The Hamilton Nationals punch their ticket to Championship weekend beating the Boston Cannons.
For the third time in team history, the Hamilton Nationals are heading to the MLL Championship Weekend. Hamilton (9-3) clinched a playoff berth after defeating the Boston Cannons 17-12 at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The Nationals got goals from nine different players to put their current winning streak to three games. Rookie Kevin Cunningham (2g+3a) tied his career high with five points, while fellow rookie Garrett Thul from Army, notched a career-best six points (5g+1 two point) which included multiple behind the back and diving goals and one combination of both. For this performance he was named the MLL Offensive Player of the Week in only his fourth start this season. Also, Brett Queener went coast-to-coast pretty early in the first to score for the Nationals.
The defense was tight on Rabil all night, and held him scoreless through most of the game, till nearly the end of the fourth quarter. This really hurt Boston's overall play, not to mention they were nearly shutout in the first.
Not much can be said about the Cannons play in this one. They allowed so many Nationals players to walk in untouched with the ball and score in the first half, nine goals in the first half alone. Cam Flint was able to get one goal and two assists, and Rabil got a goal, and a two pointer, but that was the best a Cannon player could do. They started showing up to late in the game, but did manage to shake it up a bit in the second/third, to no avail.
Hamilton clinched a playoff birth with the win, and Boston is starting to spiral out. Boston is in a battle for the last spot between New York and Charlotte, with Charlotte currently winning the battle, but only by a game or two, but that's all that is left in this MLL season, so Bostons post season hopes will come down to the wire.
